Drawing in the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology

Welcome to Urban Sketchers Cambridge!

This is the blog for the Cambridge chapter of Urban Sketchers where you will find details of sketchcrawls in and around the city.

Our next sketchcrawl will be at the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Downing Street, Cambridge, on Saturday 27th February. This is a fantastic place to draw with artifacts from all over the world ranging from tiny Roman and Anglo Saxon jewellery to the massive Haida totem Pole from British Columbia.

Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology entrance

We will meet in the archway that leads into the Downing site at 11.45, ready for heading into the Museum to sketch at 12.00. The Museum doesn't provide stools so you may wish to bring your own. Yasemin has kindly arranged for a small group to sketch in the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences for those that would prefer to sketch there. For those that like to draw buildings the courtyard contains some splendid facades.

Entrance to Downing site

Entrance to the Museum is free but you may wish to make a donation.

At 2.00 we will adjourn to the LivingStones cafe in St Andrews Street for refreshments and sketchbook swapping. We would like to take some group photos with our sketches and also some photos of people sketching in the museum for our Facebook page and this blog. If you don't wish to be included in the photos please let us know on the day.

Inside the Museum

Getting there
Bicycle
There are several cycle racks near the museum including the Grand Arcade cycle park providing space for over 200 cycles. The Downing Street entrance is on the right after the entrance to the car park.
Bus and rail
The Museum is about 20 minutes walk from Cambridge rail station, buses to the city centre are very frequent. Most local buses stop in Emmanuel Street, just a few minutes walk from the Museum.
Car
There is no visitor parking at the Museum. The nearest car parks are Grand Arcade and Queen Anne Terrace, both expensive and likely to be full on Saturday. There is limited metered parking on Regent Street. A better option is one of the five Park and Ride sites.

We look forward to seeing you there!
